Lawrence, KS - University of Kansas campus police officers are now carrying Naloxone. Naloxone, commonly referred to by its brand name, Narcan®, is an FDA approved over-the-counter medication used to intervene in opioid overdose, including fentanyl. Narcan® is one of the most dependable interventions during an opioid overdose. Narcan® carried by KU police officers is in the form of a nasal spray. It is considered a safe medication with no adverse effects if given to someone who does not have opiates in their system. Any KU police officer responding to a potential overdose will administer the medication and follow up with any additional medical intervention required. For more questions about KU police departments use of Narcan®, contact kupd@ku.edu or call 785-864-5900.
